ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON LANGUAGE EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Roundtable on Language Education for Sustainable Development

At a time when the Sustainable Development Goal Progress Report – released in April 2023 – shows that just 12% of the SDG targets are on track, it has become increasingly compelling to provide sustainability education within our curricula. It is therefore fitting that foreign language educators should also consider a variety of approaches to embed a broad range of sustainability issues into their syllabi.

The roundtable discussion is a follow-up to a Special Section on Sustainable development literacy in Language Learning and Teaching in the CercleS journal Language Learning in Higher Education (2022). This process revealed that research in this field remains scant and greater awareness needs to be raised. Locating our roundtable discussion under the UNITAR and CercleS umbrella and within the theme of Pedagogical Approaches for Climate Change Education, we aim to promote reflection among participants on ways of embedding sustainability issues into the foreign languages curriculum.

Four experts in the field of sustainable literacy in language teaching and learning will share their views and experiences during the discussion:

• Maria-José de la Fuente, Professor of Spanish and Applied Linguistics, Department of Romance, German, and Slavic Languages and Literatures, The George Washington University
• Owain Llewellyn, English language teacher and teacher trainer, Pathways college in Bangor, Gwynedd. Founder of org – ELT Sustainable
• Seth Peabody, Assistant Professor of German, German Minor Coordinator, Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota
• Kiley Kost, Lecturer in German, Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota
